Default Garmin 4212

I'm thinking about the Garmin 4212 - and would like to use a "In Hull" sender unit. They show the GSD 22 but will the 21 work as well?

Also, do I still have to buy the Card to get satellite views with this unit or does it come already installed?

Thanks

The GSD 21 would work with a 4212, but I would recommend against it. It is significantly older analog technology and the image quality is quite a bit below the GSD 22. It also exclusively uses CAnet data connections vs. the Garmin Network. Garmin network is plug-and-play; CAnet is a pain in the rear wire - I've done both.

The G2 Vision card is additional and required for any satellite imagery, and other advanced features.

The satellite imagery is really not that useful and it slows the plotter down substantially. I would also recommend the GSD22.

Cheers,

Cheers,
The stellite imagery only slows it down IF you have them turned on overlaying on the chart under the Appearance menu. turn them off, and only use them when needed, and they have no affect. I LOVE them.

The satellite views are FANTASTIC. Perhaps I am in a sailboat and don't notice the refresh rate as much as the faster ones among us. I also love the aireal shots. When approaching a new marina they are priceless. The best feature of the Vision 3D is the mariners eye view. It gives you a view of what the lights should look like. they actually flash at the same interval as the light does. I do a lot of night sailing and have always freaked out when I could not find a light. Now the light is right where the 4212 tells me and it is flashing with the same sequence. A friend ran aground without the 4212 3G vision and when I showed him how the mariner's eye view worked he got the card that day - no more problems.

I have not found the fish eye view very helpful. Perhaps it is because I am in Florida and we don't have a lot of difference in the bottom contours. Pretty much flat with little variances. The color coding by depth is pretty nice.

My 2 cents - I would get the Vision card!
