I got an Airmar B60 thru hull with a 20 degree tilt to suit my deadrise. The deepest we get around here is 200' so 600w is plenty. If you need something deeper I would get the Airmar B164 which is a 1kw thru hull.

Both these transducers are installed through a hole in the hull so you will need the correct size hole saw if you are doing the install yourself.

Cheers,

The answer is "it depends". More information about your typical fishing activities / grounds would help.

Airmar makes transducers for Garmin. I suggest you go look at their site - www.airmar.com. They have a number of very informative documents that explain the pros / cons of various transducer types. It helped me greatly in understanding what would best fit my needs for the cost, which ended up being a B60 with 20 degrees of tilt.

We fish mostly out of Miami and the keys. Also planning on going to Bahamas.I mostly freedive, my dad does the deep fishing.
Have looked at the b164 Airmar, seems like a good set up. Any adaptation to connect it to gsd22 sounder or just plug and play?
Have read that a lot of guys here don't like the Garmin transducers,is Airmar better??
Thanks for the help guys.

I have a B164 titled connected to a GSD22, and so far I love it.

Yes, it is a plug a nd play if you order the B164 for the Garmin 4212.

Garmin does not make any transducers. Airmar makes the transducers Garmin sells. You will buy a Garmin part #, but it will be made by pretty much the only sounder transducer company on the planet, Airmar.

Just installed the B60 w/20 deg tilt on my boat Monday PM.

It was pretty straightforward, once you get past the willingly drilling a hole in your hull part. I had to have a buddy do the drilling.

I'll sea trial it tomorrow to test for leaks.

HAHA.
I just ordered one myself based on the fact that a VERY competent friend of mine will help me do the install (and all of the drilling, lol)

I still don't feel comfortable drilling a hole in the hull but if it is for better results oh well
shame

NO LEAKS!!!! sea temp, split freq, is a beautiful thing. I have to mess with the gain a bit but happy about the no leaks and sea temp the most.

I love it when a plan comes together.
