Will it ever happen, a Clarion CMD head unit with DVD functionality? Why is Clarion so far behind the rest of the planet??

Cause the CMD4 I have installed (came with boat) is BROKE. Well, broke in my mind anyway. It won't play MP3's!! That is BROKE in 2008!! Then throw in it won't play DVD's, and WOW!! I mise well remove it!!!

So I look for the plug in upgrade (slide the old beast out, slide the new one in, easy change), and find that it is a the CMD5. Low and behold it does not play DVD's??? What kind of sick demented person designs a head unit in todays perfect world, without DVD functionality???? How in the world is a Capt supposed to watch porn on the way out to the Canyons?????

Have not been out the canyon this year. Hasn't been any fish, and I didn't have the time. Haven't fished inshore much this year either.

Same request here. I prefer the Clarion, but require the DVD functionality. Didn't want to add a separate player. I ended up going with the Aquatic AV DVD-3. It's being installed on the boat over the next two weeks with the rest of the electronics. I'll report back once once I've had a chance to play with it.

CMD 6 needs:
1. USB on front face to play mp3 thumb drives
2. 3 zone volume
3. DVD out
4, complete revised wired remote - more display and much smaller

Well, I really don't "prefer Clarion at all, but that's what's in there now, so it makes it a really easy swap since they ussually stick with the same connector on back and same size cutout/install screws...

Of course the DVD out would be there, it wouild not have it's own display. But, add to the list:
5. Aux audio IN (alhough they already have that now).
6. Weather band receiver with Weather Alert scanning all the time (not required, but would be nice).

Thanks for the reply since Clarion radio's are installed in most new boats I am sure that may be holding their hands back a bit. but I agree with you.

take care

if that one works with a XMD3 or CMD4, it will work with a CMD5 as mine (the oval model) has worked with all three....

I'm with Glen on the remote rewire. They can even keep the same HUGE one as now (I already have hole cut for it), but at least make the presets USABLE on the remote.

Default RE: Clarion CMD 6????

I wouldn't expect a marine DVD player from clarion or anyone besides Aquatic AV for a while. Reason being is look at their regular car CD player lineup - barely any companies make a CD/DVD player that doesn't have a screen. Pioneer does but its almost extinct and Alpine makes one that is $1600. The marine market is really only being attacked by Clarion, Sony, and Alpine as far as headunits are concerned. Kenwood hasn't changed their design in years and neither has Pioneer. I spoke with a Pioneer rep and he said Pioneer had no plans to dive into the marine market. It's just not a big enough market for them to care, even though I don't agree. With cars going pretty high tech and many not even having the ability to integrate new head units with, you'd think they'd just revise their units now for a marine market. Sony, as much as everyone hates them, is not bad for the marine market. Their remote controls work nicely and when using the new marine Sony CDX-M50IP it will pass Ipod text to the remote.

To the contrary, there are LOTS of head units out there with no display. Jensen's had one out for 3 or 4 years now, just sold my old boat with that unit (model: MCDVD6115 or something like that) in it that I installed a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure Clarion will come out with one this winter, Janurary to be exact at the Boat show in FL. A Clario tech I spoke to recently wouldn't say for sure what features it would have, but he wasn't denying that the new unit to be released this winter would have a DVD player in it.

There is a HUGE call for it from the manufactureres right now, they are intalling LCD TV's in all the new boats and need a nice clean DVD install.....

To all on this forum - Clarion has been the leading OEM marine stereo supplier for years and has introduced a lot of new products over the last 10-15 years. With all consumer electronics, you have low-cost companies with tons of features or the latest thing but they never seem to get it right. So that being said, its not about being first, its about maintaining the reputation it takes so long to build. I have owned many stereos on many boats and I continue to use Clarion each and everytime. They stand behind their products and aren't fad chasers.

Birdman - You mention your CMD4 not compatible with MP3's. Well in 2003/2004 MP3's weren't what they are today. A 2004/2005 automobiles don't have MP3 compatible CD players neither. Use the AUX input and bring your portable unit with you. Or buy the CMD5 since you want a new technology to be compatible.

Glen E - Clarion "XMD and CMD series" source units are watertight. Having an USB port on the front would be convenient to most but wouldn't provide much protection from water intrusion. These source units utilize the entire face plate to make them easier to operate which is why the whole face folds down now compared to the "XMD series" which only had a door to access CD. Having an USB port on the front wouldn't allow the face to fold down easily or it would take up some real estate not allowing for the great layout. I am hoping for USB but not on the faceplate.

Elusive - The remote you show does work with the CMD5 and control all items except the MUTE function when in the CD mode.

Joe - The previous CMD4, CMD4A, and earlier models have preset access from the remote. The newer source units have the seek feature. A change I didn't want to see happen but it is what it is I guess.

lknTP17 - Good thinking but not true.

To all: I attended the IBEX 2008 show. Clarion showed a new DVD watertight unit. Birdman, it has its own display. A 3.5" LCD built into the faceplate. I have looked at all the other DVD players on the market, and even if this Clarion one did not have an LCD on the display, it has features that no other DVD unit on the market offers. Take a look at the IBEX New Products Catalog and see what you think.

As far as a CMD6, well that is around the corner to replace the CMD5. It has the similar cosmetics as the new DVD unit (CMV1) but with a "boat load" more features. (USB, iPod interface built-in, Dual AUX inputs, Fixed Audio outputs, etc)

www.ibexshow.com/pdfs/2080_IBEX_NPP.pdf

All new remotes with more information and full media controls. (preset or seek control!)

Now I go back to what I said in the beginning, its not about being first. To me, this unit will be a homerun for Clarion and it was worth the wait, if you call Jensen, Aquatic, and MB Quart competition. NOT!

So will the new CMD 6 fix the seek "feature", at least to theability it's described in the CMD5 owners manual to work?

Jensen isn't really a great company. Really hardly anyone offers with a great reputation offers a single din DVD unit without a monitor. Clarion coming out with a marine CD/DVD combo is awesome by all means, but I bet you it has a pretty high price tag especially considering a CMD5 is nearly $400. And the reason clarion tackled the marine market is because they were failing miserably in the car market. By the way, you guys can get a wireless RF remote for most radios from www.ideasthatfloat.com
