Default GSD22 or something else?

I have a 4208 and was thinking about adding the gsd22 to the set up. My concern is that the FF capabilities are sub par and would like to know your experiences and thoughts. On the other had I would also like some recommendations on other ff in the 700-1000 range. I have an older furuno gray scale ff and would like to upgrade to a color unit.

I've got the GSD22 with a 1000watt tilted ducer. So far I am happy with the unit, alhtough I have not done a whole lot with it yet. It is giving me about the same detail as my previous Raymarine digital DS500x unit, except it's a bit easier to use (easier menus as with all the Garmin products). In 70 to 100' of water, it gives me a nice crisp pic of the bottom and shows fish and bait on the bottom clearly.

I have not been offshore this year in any real water, so I can't yet comment on how it performs in deep water, but so far, in 100 feet and shallower (down to 2'), it has perfiormed well.

I have noticed in very shallow water (less than 6'), you have to sometimes drop the gain way down to 10 or 20% to hold bottom.

take a look at the Furuno 620 or 585. 620 around 700, 585 around 1100 both need transducers.

While idling in the ICW in Martin County, FL., my new GSD 22 picked up everything under the boat. I have a 600w/dual 'ducer. Saw lots of mullet in 15' and less outside the channel. Will report back when I go offshore.

I don't know if I'm picking up "everything", but here are some pics from my outing yesterday. Setup is Garmin 4208, GSD22, B60 tilted. Settings are auto gain, 200mHz. (Also posted in other thread linked above.) My depths rarely exceed 95-100 feet, so I don't know what happens in deeper waters. Pics are from a camera phone, so they are not ideal.

I know there were fish in the area; I saw blues chasing bait on the surface and then diving down again.

Pic 2:

Pic 3: This one shows the Combination screen I usually use when fishing. It's the Sonar, 3D Fish Eye Mode, and Fishing Chart. In the lower left corner is the Fish Eye mode, where you can see I'm using it to stay right on the lower edge of the drop-off.

Thanks for the pics, that exactly matches my recent experience. I just finished installing a 4208/gsd22 solution to replace my FCV582L/Raymarince wass 320 that were fried by lightning.

I ran out to the shipping channel near sandy point light on the chesapeake last night to see how it compared.

It was attached to the same P79 the 582 was via a gemeco adapter. The display I saw was very similar to your and superior to what I was seeing with the 582 and I could actually see it where the 582 display was quite dim in comparison.

I don't go offshore so my experience probably varies quite a bit from the offshore crowd but it looks like I will be quite pleased with the Garmin.
