Garmin GPSmap 76C, CS, CSX, etc. They are pretty cheap, you can load the charts on them and they float so make a great ditch bag item as well.

since you have garmin, stick with a garmin handheld (i believe they float and are waterproof to a few meters).
its tuff to beat garmin when it comes to handheld units (just keep a couple spare good alki AAs in a ziplock). i keep a Map76 (greyscale, bought 5 years ago) and it works great, now used as a back up and actually had to use it as a back up only once so far.

if just for back-up, lots of nice slightly older units for much less than $200, especially like my map76 in greyscale (i think they are about $100 now ).

do u already have a nav/gps unit in your car?
why not get a good unit that u can use daily in the car/truck and also use it in the boat?
(just got to remember to bring it in the boat with you so it is a back-up)

Just picked up a Garmin 76 Cx for $249--these were $349 a year ago and $499 two years ago....They are being phased out in favor of the lastest models. But the 76 Cx and Cxs have the SiRF chipset, which works inside a boat, car or house (I had 10 satellites in ground floor and middle of the house--well away from any window. Plus float and are waterproof Js7 specs. (Also got the Standard Horizon hand held VHF HX270S for $84--including the alkaline battery tray and NiHi battery (again being phased out in preference to the Li ion battery)

Thataway has the killer combo. West Marine has a sale on at the moment on these gps.

Unless you've used one before, you won't be happy with a non-mapping unit. It can take you to any waypoint you set, but you will need a map to set a new one. If you load charts on your handheld you've got all the essential features of a fixed mount chartplotter, except the easy to see part!

I've got the Garmin 400c and its a great unit. Very large screen w/ great resolution, easy to use, waterproof. It was listed at $600 but i found it for $450. It couldt definitely function as a stand alone plotter.

The people I bought my boat from cruised thousands of miles with nothing but charts and a Garmin GPS 12

I have it on my boat and plan to use it as a backup if I take any more "long trips". I am using a 182c from my other boat as a main plotter until I install new units or sell the other boat.

I can't use it to tell where I'm going but I could use it to find my way back!
