Default Icom M-72 antenna- connector to longer antenna?

looking at purchasing this specific handheld VHF(ICOM M72). Was wondering if a connector is available that screws into the standard supplied antenna location to allow the use of a larger antenna such as a 4 ft. whip antenna?. Thank you for any info.

Yes you can find that (I have one). Careful not to damage the thin connector, and check VSWR.

Google up Smiley Antennas. They make really good helical wound rubber ducks. The stock antennas on most handheld radios are junk. In the ham radio world we call them dummy loads meaning they match well but don't talk to well. The M72 uses an SMA connector. Similey makes their antennas so that they can be adapted to a wide range of radios by switching to bottom connector.

A little testimonial. I met the guys from Smiley at the West Coast Ham Radio Convention in Seaside Oregon. I was using a Yaesu Vx-5r to keep in contact with my buddies through the local Astoria Repeater. In the convention hall the repeater was very scratchy and communication wasn't practicle. One of the guys at Smily handed me one of their Model 20 5/8 wave rubber ducks cut for 147mhz and - wham full scale, full quieting 5x9 signal. I was sold. I have one on my M72 cut for 156mhz and have advised many others to get one of those antennas. They flat work. With the antenna you will also need the 6a system one base for it

Try one first before you look for a 4' whip

Ted - thanks for the tip! I was just moaning about my M72 coverage yesterday - full-quieting down in the comm console (admittedly with 3 db sixty feet off the water) versus an occasional scratchy squelch break from the HT. I'll order a Smiley 5/8 with SMA male base today...
