Default Help me select a hand-held VHF.

Gentlemen,

I'm in the market for a hand-held VHF. I'd like a drop-in type charger and waterproof construction. What brand or model would you suggest? Is there any particular vendor you'd recommend?

Thanks,
Paul

Standard Horizon or Icon... other than that, make sure it's waterproof and pick your features. Do remember that a rechargeable radio is only helpful if it's been recharged. I won't buy an emergency backup radio that doesn't take alkalines...cause if there's an emergency, I want to be sure I can talk to someone even though someone knocked the radio out of its charger, etc.

Heres a thread with some info:

I vote for the Icom IC-M1V with the Lithium Ion battery. Icom lowered the price on this unit from around 225 to 169.

The battery is simply amazing. Its tough to get it to move past fully charged even without charging it for extended periods of time.

Good luck,
Scott

I have a standard HX 260 and it works well for me. I use it primarily as a backup or down in the cabin for weather in the AM when I don't want to go up to my other radio. The amin difference seems to be in types of battery systems available - I like have a AA battery tray for a backup, the AAs don't discharge

Ditto on the Icom M1V. I bought one this past spring. High quality, relatively light weight, nice form factor ... and waterproof. It has the lithium battery with drop in charger and LONG battery life.
