They are not 100% direct sunlight viewable, if thats what you are asking. However there is something you can do for around $300 that will make it direct sunlight viewable. Contact man and machine, http://www.man-machine.com/fishfinders.htm
They use 3M's brightness enhancement films and it is the shiznit.

It's a film they apply to the rear of the LCD instead of the normal polarizing film thats already on there, and yes you need to send them the unit. From what I have read it makes the display around 150% brighter, and widens the field of view a lot more as well.
A couple of guys on here have posted they had done it and were happy with the results. Do a search on man-machine or something like that.

electronics box up in the t-top. Thank you for all of your ideas.

Well I sort of had to put it off for the time being. I decided to distract myself with a new autopilot, and a new tablet pc. I do have a vendor that will cut the film to my dimensions though, so whenever I get back to it.

Are the new 582l units more visible than older ones. My last one in another boat was hard to see in the sun. Have they changed at all because I just got a new one. Maybe sending it out is the best option.
