Default handheld garmin gps keeps going "blank"

wondering if anyone might know why my garmin 72 turns on, acquires satellites, stays on 5 to 10 minutes and then the screen goes blank except for a thin, black, vertical line. i've changed the batteries with new ones and it keeps doing the same thing. unit is about 4 years old.

any ideas about what's wrong?

thanks,

No idea, but my eTrex Legend does the same thing. I've found that it is still sending info to my radio even when the screen is blank and eventually it starts displaying info again. I am guessing a combination of a bad connection in the lcd and heat since mine is almost always sitting in the sun on my console.

Was wondering if anyone has a resolution to this. My garmin that is wired to my boat does this. Also my hand held battery powered marine garmin does it when it is on my boat as well, but not when on land

My chart plotter is a garmin 2006c.. it's kind of older, don't rememeber what the handheld is, but it's a garmin marine. The hand held works fine when it's not in my boat. I was thinking it had something to do with interference in my wiring, between the radio, digital compass, or possibly the electric trim module... my speedo and tachometer also get funny.. not the main power or ground connections...

I have the 72, does the same thing. My son has an etrex, just started doing the same thing. Really sucks his started when we were about 9 miles in the woods and needed it to get back. Typical Garmin crap. I don't know why I keep buying their stuff.

If it's that common of an issue, someone has to know what causes it

I bought a Garmin Nuvi car GPS 3 years ago, and paid extra for "lifetime" free maps. It turns out that it's not the purchaser's lifetime, but the product's "lifetime cycle", as determined by Garmin. I was offered a map upgrade for a healthy fee, so it's not like the product is obsolete. I also had to pay an obscene upgrade charge to get a model with any coverage of Canada.

One reason I refuse to consider Garmin marine products, the second being incompatibility with Navionics charts, vital for how and where I boat. Navionics has an exclusive partnership with a university which has been charting Lake Champlain for decades and leasing the data to fund their program. The college can provide 6" contour bathy data, but Navionics limits it to 1' intervals, and only on their highest-priced map chips.

There was a backdoor jailbreak hack to use Navionics chips on Garmin MFDs, but Garmin closed the backdoor and took legal action...it's still possible, but not with current firmware.

My next electronics package will have to be a Navico product, unless/until Raymarine adds solidstate broadband radar, which I'm hoping is just around the corner, so, I'm dragging my feet.

I also had a Garmin 376, then a 376c, for motorcycle and for marine back-up. Both units spent most of their warranty in the shop, due to water intrusion or display failures, all attributed by Garmin to be from high-frequency vibration on the bike (Yamaha FJR1300) which has no obvious vibration at all. Then they blamed my mount lacking vibration isolation (ironic, since it was a Garmin mount!). The 1st three times, I was told that they had never heard of the problem, and both units were replaced with refurbs rather than serviced. Good customer service is only important if you constantly need it.

I have a 76csx that has that issue. It stays on, if perfectly stable. But if it's moved too much (pitching rolling boat) it turns itself off. When you turn it back on it works for a bit. Really annoying. I think vibration and pounding is the culprit.

Don't know of any other marine HH manufacturers. So I bought a 78sc Black Friday. It's completely redesigned so I'm hoping for the best. Bought a mount to limit the pounding.
