Default Proper way to splice GPS antenna coax

I have and older lowrance (lms 160) that uses a rg-174 wire to run the antenna. The smb connector was cut to remove the coax from a tight chase. I have reinstalled the unit into another boat and just briefly this afternoon stripped the wires back and twisted the inner wire together and twisted the outer braid together and powered up the unit just to see if it would acquire any sattelites before I permanently spliced the two together and the unit will not pick up any sattelites at all. Does it have to be soldered and shielded before it will work. What is the proper way to go about doing this because I thought just making connections between the outer and inner wires should have at least got some kind of response. I also did a soft and hard reset on the unit with no better results.

Default RE: Proper way to splice GPS antenna coax

Is this one too easy or do I need to buy a wheel to get an answer?

You won't know until you do a proper splice with an RG 174 connector. You can't kluge an RF connection, so check the entire cable.
