Default Difference betwenn KVH 1000 power and sail

What's the difference between the power and sail version of the KVH autocomp 1000? Can the sail version be used on a power boat?

Often compasses designed for fast power craft have different damping characteristics to those designed for sailing vessels. If you were to fit a sailing boat compass to a fast power boat, you may find that the compass card oscillates wildly. OK I know that the Autocomp doesn't have a viewable compass card, but you probably get the picture.

A compass designed for sailboat use also needs to have quite a high gimbal range, probably 45-50 degrees as a sailing boat can heel quite a lot. Most powerboat compasses will have a gimbal range of about 25 degrees.

So, I feel it's probably mainly to do with the damping of the output signal.

I may be wrong, but if I am I'm sure that I will be corrected.

That makes good sense. Thanks for the information.
