Default New Lowrance 527c iGPS Display Problem

Just plugged in my new Lowrance 527c iGPS and the screen is barely visible! I can see it's powered on and displays the Lowrance logo and then boots to the std map display but you can barely make anything out on the screen. And this is inside out of direct sunlight.

I've checked all connections, in terms of power and can't see anything wrong. Do you think this unit has a faulty LCD display? I read here that Lowrance recommend connecting directly to the battery and using their inline fuses along with a std switch as units can draw up to 11amps of power!

In my case in terms of wiring, I'm going from the battery switch to a dual bus bar which then has a feed to a 4 way Blue Sea fused switch panel which has the common negative to the bus bar negative and the positive rail to a positive feed on the bus bar. The Lowrance 12+ve supply is then connected to one of the switches and the negative to the common negative on the fused switch panel. I changed the std 15 amp fuse with the Lowrance recommended 3amp fuse.

Could this be my issue, using the blue sea switch panel? I could try as an experiment to wire it direct to the battery using the inline fuse to eliminate everything else, but it seems strange as it powers up and everything just with a barely viewable screen. Just looked up their hard reset procedure as well which I can try.

If anyone has any ideas would really appreciate them, as I'm totally stumped.

Happy Memorial Day.

Regards,

Skip

Sounds like your backlight is off, if you hit the power button again once the unit powers up it will turn on, the more you tap the power button the darker the backlight gets, hope its as simple as that for you.

My Garmin has a brightness control in the software, accessible through the main menu. No idea whether Lowrance has the same feature.

Unfortunately tried the pwr button for backlight and doesn't even appear the backlight is working

I'm desperately hoping it's some weird power issue and when I connect direct to the battery my problems will be solved, but I think it's a real long shot.

As I could just about make out the menu, I even tried turning up contrast and brightness from the software, no avail.

Hi tcm, thanks for your reply. Bought it from West Marine and am based outside of the US so can't deal directly with Lowrance it seems. Tried to get hold of someone yesterday but being Memorial Day for you guys was skeleton staff, as ideally I would just like them to send a replacement head unit and have me send this one back. However the guy I spoke to seemed to think I needed to send everything back! Obviously transducer, paddle wheels and brackets etc are already installed and mounted in place. Hope WM can just swap the faulty head unit.

You might check to see whether you have the downloadable 527C software update to 2.3.0, as one of the things that update says it addresses is "Modifies backlighting properties." No ide whether that has anything to do with your unit's SolarMax display's lack of lighting, which should be plenty bright.

What changes are made in this update?
Added Lowrance HD radar support via serial communications
Added Greek language
Added Polish language
Added ability to take a screenshot capture of the display on the unit and save to a card/hard drive – In Screen Snapshot mode, use the power key to capture the screenshot
Added Navionics Platinum support including 3D view and panoramic photos
Added support for the Lowrance Broadband Sounder-1
Updated language translations
Improved sonar digital depth tracking in weeds and over bluffs
Improved Navionics support
Changed Map/Sonar/Radar page to be resizeable
Includes all features from previous updates, including:
Modified backlighting properties
Improved ethernet stability
Moved the Cancel Navigation menu item to the top of the system menu
Many modifications to radar settings and features
Modified SD/MMC data storage properties
Added support for HDM NMEA0183 sentence
Improved Navionics card support
Added sonar sharing over ethernet
Modified Auto-Sensitivity feature
Modified memory card reading functionality
Enhanced Navionics support
Enhanced NauticPath electronic chart support
Enhanced sonar noise detection
System Requirements:
LMS-527C DF iGPS update software will run on any Java-enabled machine running Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP/2003, Mac OS X, or Linux.

Thanks for the tips. I'm thinking as a long shot that it could be the software has an issue and is turning the contrast and brightness down to zero and not letting me change it as I tried to adjust those sliders for contrast and brightness and it didn't show any change, not even a small one.

Will try a hard reset procedure first which Lowrance recommend and then as you posted, will update the software to 2.3.0 assuming I can see what I'm doing as it's almost impossible to read the screen.

It's like when you turn the contrast levels and brightness down to zero on your TV, you know there's a picture but you can't actually see anything much.

Fingers crossed.

Tried the hard reset and did nothing. Did the software update and remained the same. Can only conclude it must have a faulty display screen

Kudos to West Marine. As Lowrance don't offer a replacement head unit only, they are shipping me out a whole new kit!! Once I confirm everything is working, was told to pop the faulty head unit back in the box with the other bits and ship back on their shipping a/c number.

I am most impressed to say the least, as we don't see this level of customer service in Malta. A big thumbs up to West Marine.

New kit arrived and head unit is working perfectly. Tried to 'simulate' the old display and came close by turn the backlight to its lowest settings and turning screen contrast and brightness down to lowest. Reckon the backlight was not working on the old unit.
