Default VHF antenna

What is colinear?
I'm looking at two antennas

Shakespeare 5202 VHF Collinear Phase Antenna : 8 Ft
Collinear Phased 5/8-wave
Bandwidth (within 2.0:1 SWR): 3 MHz
SWR: 1.5:1 at 156.8 MHz
Impedance (Ohms): 50
Gain: 6 dB

Shakespeare 5102 VHF Antenna : 8 Ft
Bandwidth (within 2.0:1 SWR): 5 MHz
SWR: 1.5:1 at 156.8 MHz
Impedance (Ohms): 50
Gain: 6dB

A collinear phased antenna is used for when you want gain in a vertical antenna.

If you want a more detailed explanation, you can go to WWW.ARRL.ORG and order some antenna theory books. Or use Google.

A lot of people go crazy over antennas. I am a ham, so one would think I went out and spend a gob on my boat antenna. Not so. My antenna is a 1/2 wave element, end fed. It works fine. I hear everything I want to hear.

Both the antennas you are looking at are 5/8 wave. Just get one. I do not think it matters which. You will go crazy if you start comparing all the antennas out there.

The 5102 can be had for 59.98 and the 5202 is 72.99. Is it worth the diff. I realize its only 13 bucks but why spend it if its not going to help me.

Got me. I checked the company website and can not see any difference in the two - other than the bandwidth. The 5102 is slightly more wide band than the other one, which would suggest slightly lower gain but it can be used over a greater frequency range.

I would probably just go with the 5102. Unless I could break both antennas open and look at the elements, I can not see a difference in the two based on the specs alone.
