Default Reliable VHF Radios

I bought a boat with a very low end standard horizon VHF. I "upgraded" to an Icom M422 with DSC and have had nothing but problems. Its been repaired twice and it just broke again(stays in transmit mode). The local Icom rep has been great with warranty repairs but the headache has been ridiculous. Anyone have any suggestions for a reliable and quality VHF?

Second that, but I think its rare to have as many problems as you have with the ICOM. I have had several Standard Horizon, ICOMs and Apelco radios and they have all performed well. One lesson I have learned is that the Ant is just as important as the radio.

For my latest boat I have the Standard Horizon matched with the Digital ant., because it comes with so many features for the price. They are good quality electronics in the mid-price range. IMHO.

Go back to your "low end" Standard Horizon.

If you want to upgrade it. get the S/H Quest X or the Matrix. I like Icom stuff, but right now the best value for the money is with Standard Horizon.

I have a really cheap Cobra -- bought THREE of them, put one on each of two boats, and put one in a setup so my wife can call me if necessary -- they have been great. I broke a knob on one, but it still works. I also have a low end icom I think , and it has been great also. Frankly, I've been stunned at how reliable the cheap stuff is. I have a low end portable and it has worked well until the antenna connector broke; soldred on a cable to an external antenna and it works great also.

Don't buy the expensive stuff, just buy the $120-$130 radios that sells in the tens of thousands and have all the bugs worked out.

ICOMs are very good radios. Has it always broken with the same problem? If so, I would say it was never fixed right in the first place.
