Default Garmin 4208 Fish Finder , Any Good?

I recently installed a Garmin 4208 Bundle but I am undesided if I should hook up the GSD22 Sounder Module.

My understanding is that Garmin makes a great GPS map but thier fish finders lack.
Has their technology changed? Have they gotton any better?

Currently I have a Sitex CVC 833 (color). Nice big stand lone unit but the day light viewing sucks!

Yes, the GSD22 is a great improvement. What transducer are you planning on using?

The GSD 22 paired with the 1K ducer is a good combo. They have come a long way since the GSD 20.

If you want the best though and have the room look at the Furuno FCV-585 or FCV-620. Those units are amazing.

I know the Furuno is good, But when I bought the Garmin I almost got the GSD for fee, All I need is the Transducer.

I have both. The Furuno is better however, the Garmin with the gsd22 is a very good setup. You're going like the ez zoom features, ultrascroll and the color separation. It will do everything you will need it to do.

Good Luck, go have some fun and catch some fish!

I was considering the Garmin 4208 with the GSD22 sounder and a transom mount tranducer. How does this unit compare to the Humminbird 997c combo unit? The humminbird has the side looking sonar using one transducer. Thoughts on the Humminbird vs. the Garmin?

I have two 4212's with GSD22 and an Airmar B164 on our new boat. Had a Furuno FCV 585 on my previous boat. Having used both I do think the Furuno has an edge. That said, the Garmin setup is still, pretty darn good and does a fine job marking bottom fish in deep water. If you are a stuck on having the absolute best you might want to consider the Furuno. Otherwise, if its more about having a unit that gets the job done and is user friendly, go with the Garmin. By the way, that new Airmar B164 tilted element transducer is great!!

jeme,
The hummingbird is no comparison, the quality on those just isn't there. Secondly, FORGET the transom mount ducer. Do your self a huge favor, save your self some aggrevation and money in the long run, and get yourself a Thru Hull transducer. Then, thank me later.

I agree with your assessment.

The dealership I am buying a boat from is really against doing a thru hull traducer - really against it. That is what I would like as well - it is only a 21ft. boat. We will have to see - I am also still considering the Humminbird for the side facing sonar.

Does anyone have the Humminbird that is happy?

Use a quality in-hull transducer (like a Airmar M260 or even a P79) and forget about putting a hole in the bottom of your boat.
