Default Garmin 400C and transducers

Hi! I'm new to this forum and have a question for anyone who owns or knows about Garmin transducers. First though I should say that I just bought a Garmin 4210 and was about to buy a GSD 22. A friend says I should buy a seperate sounder so that in the event that the gps ever needs to be sent to the shop I will still have my sounder and vise versa. I was also thinking that if they are seperate units I could put the sounder on the bow for when I go Bass fishing and have it linked to the 4210 for viewing there while at the helm while saltwater fishing. Any thoughts on that issue? And about transducers. Dual freq or dual beam? Does it really make a difference? Is a 500 watt one enough or should I get a stronger one? I will probably use it more in saltwater and not more than in 200 or 300 feet most of the time under 50 feet. I have never used one for bass fishing and don't know if I will. I might just mount it on the center consol next to the 4210. I have been trying to get answers on line and figure guys who have used souders for a while may have the answers I need. Sorry for the lenthy message and thanks in advance for your help.

John
