Default Raymarine wiring (need answer for simple question)

Installing my C70 with Radar and the power cable for the C70 has a spot where you connect a saddle around the cable and attach it to your boats grounding plate. What if I don't have a grounding plate? The connection is being made inside my E-Box so other than a + and - bus bar, there is not anything else inside the E-Box.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Joe

Use the - bus bar. OR, make a "grounding plate circuit". Take any brass thru hull that you have, and connect a large (#10) green wire to it, and run it up to a new "Ground plate" buss bar.

If memory serves, doesn't it say to just goto the neg side of the battery if no groung plate is available? YUP! Read below.........(last sentence)

Grounding the radar system
It is important that an effective radio frequency (RF) ground is connected to
the radar system.
You must ground the radar by connecting the drain wire (screen) of the
power cable to the nearest ground point of your boat’s RF ground system.
Full details can be found in the Owner’s Handbook for your display unit.
If you need to extend the wire, the extension wire should be an 8 mm braid
or 6 mm2 (AWG 10) multi-strand cable.
If your boat does not have an RF system, connect the drain wire to the
negative battery terminal.

I understand where the drain wire goes but there is also a 1" gap in the sheath where the shielded cable is exposed. The manual states you should use a saddle and connect it to your ground plate.

I suppose just connecting the drain wire to your - terminal will do the same job. It puzzles me that RM does not provide the saddle either - as if I have a couple of spares just laying around...

Firefly-

I have installed that Radar a few times. I don't remember seeing that exposed wire sheath EXCEPT on the end that is suppossed to be on the INSIDE of the dome. Of course, inside the dome IS the saddle clamp--(at least the RF board creates one when you sandwich the braid between it and the removeable metal plate.) The other end should be harness plug for the C70/80. Also, there is a red/blk and drain. The drain IS the same as the RF shield. I would suspect if you ohm'ed it out is is the same as the other end that IS saddled in the dome.--thus, providing an RF shield between the two. "Catching spurrious RF".

Pg. 15 of the Scanner user's manual illustrates what I was referring to.

Thanks again. Page 28 of the C70 installation manual:

This cable is supplied prepared for connecting to your boats DC power supply, with the
cable is supplied with a length of screen exposed before the positive and negative wire
tails. This screen should be clamped to your boat’s earth/ground with the saddle clamp,
as shown below: (they show a picture of the power cable (C70) where it connects to your DC power supply)

They don't mention the drain but it's there and I know enough to connect it to the - terminal.
I've never seen a power cable with the exposed sheath like this one has????

My mistake. I thought the issue was with your Radar input power cable. Not the C70/80 input power cable.... oops.

No worries. I called RM and they said to leave it be.
