Default Electronics Guru's I need some Loran interferece help!

Here's the deal. I noticed my loran is not working this year. It powers on but does not settle. After confirming that our other boats loran is operating perfectly which sit right next to me. I tried replacing the coupler. This worked BUT only when I moved the coupler to the most forward part of the boat. The moment I move the couplet to the T-top ( where I have two VHF anytennas, 1 Radar, and a GPS ant.) I again loose signal. Tried different units and different couplers but got the same result each time. Also triede moving the boat to see I was in some tgype of whole. But to no avail. It appears I am somehow getting electrical interference somehow but I do not understand how as all the other electronics equipment off.

Unfortunately, the antenna size for Loran and VHF is very similar so the VHF antennas can act as shields to the Loran, even if they are not in use. First temporarily remove the VHF antenna(s) to determine that they are in fact the culprit. If that works then try experimenting with the relative position of the antennas. When I had this problem I was able to solve it by putting the Loran antenna only a few inches away from the VHF and it started to work. There are no easy rules and experimenting is your best approach.

You might try a better RF Ground. If you can find it there is a SS braid cable that can tie your electronics to your boats bonding system. This has a big impact on LORANs for some reason. I had an old Sitex XJ-7 with similar issues. I increased the guage of the Ground wire (-) and added the RF cable to the wing-nut connector on the back of the unit and it did the trick. Might be worth a shot. Good Luck.

what he said,my loran is surrounded by 2 GPS antenna's, a radome and the VHF antenna and work's fine.but i too has to put a ground strap for it to work right.

All, thaks for the suggestions, very much appreciated. I was able to fix it today. Here's what the issue was.

After tearing everything apart. Changing units, couplers, grounding, wiring etc. I went down today without my chief engineer, the 2yr old, and started again to trouble shoot. I then pulled back to analyze the situation. Realizing it can't be grounding, or dirty power because the unit works 100% if the antenna is outside of approximately a 10' radius of the hard top. So I said self this is no grounding issue. Then I checked the flourencent tube lights I have under the hard top. Son of a gun if one wasn't on but burnt out. Switched it off and wala loran is working 100%. Turned the starboard flourescent light on on wala signal degrdation begins to occur, that one is working. It seems the radiation put out by the flourescent lights drastically increases signal degradation. I hardly if ever user the flourescent lights so it was never noticed before.

Hope this info may help someone down the road.
