Default Testing AQUAFIX PLB GPS acquisition???

I cannot understand how you are to tell whether you have successfully pre-loaded an ACR AQUAFIX personal locator beacon, with lat/long data from an external GPS, during testing.

I guess I'll have to call the company after having read their instruction manual cover to cover three times....but perhaps someone knows how it works.

I can test the beacon itself fine: you push the batt-test button and the green LED comes on once, beeps, comes on again and the test is completed.

I can initiate the GPS acquisition: you press the GPS I/O button while your nmea-output infrared interface system is in place, and its green (visible) LED is blinking to convince you that your gps is putting out data -- but for the life of me, I cannot find a way to figure out whether the Aquafix GOT the information!!

The manual seems completely silent onthis. The attached plastic "quickie" instructions suggest the red led should flash and eventually the green one, but I am NOT trying to use up the battery by activating the INTERNAL gps -- I'm trying to practice pre-loading it from an external gps (in this case, a garmin unit that has a nmea output that works just fine with all my dsc radios, so I know it puts out something!).

Anyone faced this issue before and know how this works? Your help much appreciated! Gordon

Default RE: Testing AQUAFIX PLB GPS acquisition???

I reached "nico" at the ACR Electronics company and the first words out of his mouth were, "well, when you initiate a distress call, you would know whether it uploaded the gps by whether it blinks red or green...." and then he recognized that we want to know NOW, not THEN whether it works!

So he said he would look into it and call me back....on his first look, he was just as puzzled as I am as to how in the world you know if it ever uploaded from the optical interface system they provide.....on anothr model they make, it gives you some feedback, but on this unit he as not sure.....

That would be a problem in my view, if you could never know if this worked, without having to have a real initiation of a distress call!!
