Default problems with Lowrance LMF-400 and GPS receiver

Hi,

I install last year Lowrance LMF-400 gauge and Suzuki engine interface to see fuel consumption and some other engine data provided by my Suzuki DF140. That works just fine, I can see how much engine is burning fuel, engine hours, engine diagnostics data and some other stuff from engine.

Now I like to know my fuel economy readings (gallons/nautical miles) and boat position and speed. So I bought Lowrance LGC-2000 GPS receiver and I did attach it in my boat NMEA2000 network with the Suzuki engine interface and LMF-400 gauge. First time when I test the GPS receiver, it did show my position correctly and showing speed (speed was 0 because boat was not moving).

After that, the system has never work correctly, my GPS position page in LMF-400 says "No Fix" and position data shows nothing and data boxes are just flashing. GPS speed is also missing.

When I check my bus devices from system setup menu (in LMF-400), it shows that GPS receiver is working correctly as well as the engine interface (that is actually working ok).

Now I am really confused what to do to fix the problem. I have reset to LMF-400 and taking the GPS receiver away and put it back to the NMEA2000 network and trying to configure the system again and again. Nothing seems to help, just can't get my position/speed data. Weird thing is that GPS receiver is actually working (have test it with another GPS display). I believe there are some problems in LMF-400 gauge to show GPS position or something like that.

Anyone have facing same kind of problems with LMF gauges? What to do next?

I have an lmf 400 w/ an LGC 3000 and I have had no such problems. Maybe your T connector is bad.
Did you call Lowrance?

T-connector is ok, I have tried it with another T and the problem doesn't go away. I think the NMEA2000 network works just fine. I am pretty sure the problem is in LMF configuration, but as you know the LMF manual is not so great...

Have not contacted to Lowrance yet.

You may have to do an update on the LGC 2000 which is available on the Lowrance website. Only problem is you have to have a Lowrance GPS or fishfinder with an SD card slot to download the update and then load it to the antennae.

My LGC-2000 is already updated with the latest software and the WAAS system is disabled, because it does not work here.

I have ask help from local Lowrance importer (I live in Europe), but have not get any response yet. Anyway, all help and tips how to get rid of problem is appreciated.

I wonder if your problem is No GPS fix from the LGC receiver or if you need to tell the LMF to use it?

Did you make sure and select the LGC as "The Economy Speed Source"? There is a menu location where you have to choose WHAT SOURCE to use for speed/fuel calculations.

To change Economy Speed source:
1. Press MENU, use the UP and DOWN keys to select SYSTEM SETUP and
press ENTER. Select FUEL SETUP and press ENTER.
2. Highlight ECO SPEED SRC and press ENTER to open the Economy Speed
menu. The menu has three options: Water Speed (Paddlewheel), Pitot
Speed and Ground Speed (GPS).
3. Select the desired speed source and press ENTER. You will be taken
back to the main display.

My LGC-2000 GPS receiver is tested with another GPS unit and it works. I believe that some configuration is not correct in my LMF-400 and that is causing the problem. So I need to tell somehow to LMF that use the damn GPS for speed. I think that I set ECO SPEED SOURCE as GPS but I will double check that when I go my boat next time.

One specialist from Lowrance is going to see my NMEA2000 network/LMF in next week if I am not been able to fix the problem myself before that. Lets see how it goes.

Appreciate your help. I will report what was the problem when I know it.

Hi Lti,

I have exactly the same problem. First I had 2 Mercury engines, two fuel flow sensors EP10, an LGC-2000 GPS and a LMF-400 display. It all worked fine to track my fuel consumption.
Then I replaced the Mercury's by a single new Evinrude 250HO Etec, which has a fuel flow sensor integrated and comes with a LGC-2000 plus two LMF-400. I put all the new stuff in, but the old LGC-2000 which I wanted to reuse because it was already build in my boat. To my surprise everything worked apart from the fact that I did not get a fix of the LGC-2000 GPS, although both LMS-400 reported under the subject Bus Devices that the GPS worked properly. I did a hard reset on both LMS-400 and cleared all settings, but the GPS still got no fix and still got reported to work properly.

Then I swapped the old LGC-2000 GPS against the new one and immediately everything worked properly.

Untill after 3 trips the new LGC-2000 also did not get any fix anymore, despite being also reported to work properly under Bus Devices. Resetting the LMF-400 did not change anything.

Then I connected both LGC-2000 to my old LMF-400 that always had operated properly. And to my surprise the situation was there the same: no fix despite that it was reported to work properly under Bus Devices.

I do not know what is going on. I can not look into the settings and software versions of the LGC-2000, because those menu's do not exist in a simple display device like the LMF-400. Therefor you need a Fishfinder or Plotter, which I do not have.

Lti, how did you get your problem solved?

By the way, I live in the Netherlands.

Hello and sorry for the late update.

The LMF problem is finally solved. Root cause for the prob was my LGC-2000 receiver. I get a new LGC-3000 receiver from the dealer for test and it start working immediately when I connected it to the network, get the position, speed and fuel economy. It seems that LMF-400 is not totally compatible with LGC-2000 receiver. However, it is for sure that the LGC-2000 is working ok, but for some reason it does not work with my LMF gauge. Really weird thing was the fact the LGC-2000 was working in the first time when I connecting it to the network, but ever since it has not worked...

I highly recommended that anyone who is purchasing LMF gauge get LGC-3000 receiver as well, dont mess with older LGC-2000.
