Default How do my livewells work?

I have a lot of questions, Ive never had a built in livewell.

I just bought an '05 31ft Contender and it has three livewells, one of which is in the floor.

The one in the floor is always full and when I turn it on, it just overflows.. Is that normal? How do I drain it?

The other two are empty, they fill up when I turn them on, but they overflow as well, and when I turn them off, they just drain.

Is there a way to let them run without them always overflowing?

What you describe is certainly not how livewells work.
They should NOT be full to begin with, and should never overflow. Sounds like some drains are clogged and some drain pump is not working (for the one in the floor).
Call Contender for a fix.

Your floor livewell will stay full when the boat is in the water, the pump starts the circulation only. Water will overflow onto the deck and out the scuppers. A little. If it's alot check your livewell overflow for clogging. To drain the floor livewell, take the boat out of the water or close the seacock and use a manual bilge pump. Someone may have installed a higher flow pump too. Change to a 800gph.

The two rear transom livewells will overflow also, again if it's too much check the drains and pumps (what size are on yours/gph?) You should get little or no overflow at dock, but while running both rears will splash some/alot of water out. Normal.

Not to worry, it's a boat and it's made to get wet. Let us know what size pumps you got on this!

What ludicrous said. Sounds like your seacocks for the overflow drains are closed. If so, the water will just pour out of the top of the live wells like you are experiencing.

I like Contenders but their livewell engineering is just bizarre. Dont they also have the famous model that drains into the bilge?

My 2000 23Open does that. The fish boxes and the livewell drain right into the bilge. I had to add a diaphram pump to fix the fish boxes, but I'm a bit lost as to what I should do to the drain of the floor livewell.
