Default Garmin NMEA output

I'm looking to use a Maretron / SIMRAD AT-10 to convert the output of a Garmin 500 series unit to NMEA 2000. I don't have the Garmin yet. The Garmin manual says it outputs:

Depth: DPT, DBT
Temp: MTW
Water speed & Heading: VHW

However the transducer doesn't have a paddlewheel so I have no idea how it's going to output water speed. Unless water speed == SOG, which would be wrong and possibly dangerous. It doens't seem to output ground speed or lat / long GLL. Or, if it does, does it in a Garmin proprietatry way that the AT-10 won't recognize.

Anyone know if the Garmin units will output SOG (any sentence) and Lat / Long GLL?

Thanks!

It is VHW, speed output via GPS.

Thanks, that's good news. I'll take it, but it's strange as VHW is supposed to be water speed, not GPS speed...

I'd still like to know if the unit outputs Lat / long at all, probably via GGA or GLL... Seems strange that a unit with a GPS built in wouldn't be capable of outputting a fix... Anyone?

Thanks!

I am running the 540s and dont get the speed on the unit display ..... I think you need the transducer that has the speed sensor on it to get water speed ...... unless it is on the output side only
I would verify this by calling Garmin Support

fwiw, the unit I recieved has menu options for all sorts of NMEA data output, including GGA, GLL, RMB, RMC, etc etc etc. Haven't hooked it up to anything yet, but it looks like it should work fine.

BTW, the sw version on my unit is 3.20, which is higher than the version currently available on garmin.com (go figure)...

Water speed info is selectable as either on or off. It falls in the category of Fishing Info display. You have to have a paddle wheel sensor installed for the WS to be dislayed. Here's a short video with the Fishing Info display selected. The view on the 545 is the Mariners Eye View. The segment with WS is about 35 seconds into the video.

Following up on this - per my other post.

Works:
Lat / Long, Depth

Does not work:
Speed (VHW)

Maybe speed would work if I had a transducer with a paddle wheel, but I don't...

Waste of $150...
