Default Lowrance software update – write down personal preferences first...

I just updated my Lowrance 26C HD with the latest software. What they don't tell you on the instructions is that upgrading will wipe out all your customized gauges and overlays. (Thankfully it will keep all you waypoint data intact). I had custom overlays on every page screen and they were all gone after the upgrade. It was difficult to remember how I had everything set up and had I know it would all be gone, I would have made notes of what went where. Even knowing it took a very long time to rebuild all my screens. I have written Lowrance about this, and I'm grateful to them for free software upgrades, but please be warned to make note of you personal preferences before updating.

Other than that the upgrade went fine with no problems. (I had to upgrade my GPS antenna software first, and then the unit software. I did a backup of my waypoint data first but in my case, wasn't necessary as it was all still there.

What is the purpose of upgrading the software? I know, newer is better, but my 26HD works fine. It's software is outdated but I'm always a bit nervous about messing with something that isn't broken. What additional features or bells and whistles do the new upgrades provide?

You can copy your overlay data to the SD card before doing the update, then load the file back on the unit.

Make sure that your batteries are charged at 12V or higher before doing any of the software upgrades. Mine were at 11.8 and it jammed up both the antenna and the head unit. They said the minimum voltage for the updates is 11.8v and if it dips below, that can cause the software to only partially install.

Wow, I missed that. I thought you could only backup the user data. Now if only I can remember this on the next update...
