Default Dilemma: Buy now or wait a few weeks for Furuno Navnet 3D???

Well I had the credit card out today thinking I was going to pull the trigger on new electronics for my boat. I had done tons of research on the new units to be purchased and spoke to Jim over at BOE electronics. I had made up my mind on a Furuno FCV-585 Fishfinder anda Garmin 5208 GPS/plotter (which is one of the new touch screen units) I have played around with both units and liked what I saw and read about them. But today I saw the new Furuno Navnet 3D website and was very impressed with all of the new technology. Furuno has a few videos on their site that were very informative. Plus it won the 2008 award(for whatever) and I really liked what I saw.

So the question is: Should I hold off and get the much anticipated Furuno Navnet 3D? Or go with my orignal choices?

Don't discount the Garmin GMS 22 black box fishfinder with a good Airmar 1kw transducer (b260 or b164) - I have one I use on my smaller boat, and don't see any real difference between it and the Furuno DFF1 with the same Airmar 1kw thru hull transducer on my bigger boat. It would allow you to run 2 garmin displays, giving you redundancy, rather than a seperate dedicated fishfinder. I love the two screen setup, because in bad weather, it allows me to run the chartplotter on one and the radar, usually in overlay mode on the other, rather than spliitting a single screen at half the size. It does come down to price - a Furuno setup with 2-12" MFD's, 4kw open array, bb fishfinder, heading sensor, transducer and weather receiver is about $13,000 for the equipment; the garmin is 25-30% less. IMO, Furuno's biggest advantage is in their open array radars, which are second to none in performance. If I were going with a single 12" mfd, 24" dome radar and fishfinder, I would go with the Garmin 4212 (not a big fan of touchscreen) and save the boatload of cash.

after what I read today on panbo today I'm going to hold off until I can check out the Navnet 3D.

The guy in this thread (last post) did a side by side comparison and was extremely impressed by the Navnet 3D

http://www.panbo.com/archives/2008/0...onnection.html

I'm definitely leaning toward the Navnet 3D for now.

thanks for your responses

Why not buy the FCV-585 today and then complement with a Navnet 3D when it's available.

The user interface of FCV-585 whith it's two rotary controls is much better than any MFD. A seperate fishfinder also gives good value for the money when it comes to screen size compared to a MFD.

FCV-585 for fishfinder and the 8,4" Navnet 3D unit as plotter and radar display would be a top setup.

I had the 3D navnet system on order. I canceled the order and bought the garmin 5212 with gsd-22 sounder and xm weather unit along with it. The garmin is so much easier to operate. The detail is unbelievable on the maps and sounder.
