Default LORAN UPDATE

HELLO EVERYBODY I AM NEW TO THIS SITE BUT HAVE REALLY ENJOYED READING THE THREADS. I SEE ALOT OF PEOPLE DISCUSSING THE CONVERSION PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED WITH LORAN TD'S TO GPS WAYPOINTS. THE ONLY PROVEN WAY TO GO IS BY UTILIZING A LORAN TO GET TO YOUR WAYPOINT AND THEN STORING ON YOUR GPS. I UTILIZE ON MY BOAT AND PERSONALLY BELIEVE EVERYONE OUGHT TO HAVE A BACK UP SYSTEM WITH THEM AT ALL TIMES. I HAVE A MICROLOGIC LORAN AND A GARMIN GPS THAT I RELY ON. I TOO HAD PROBLEMS CONVERTING TD'S SO I PURCHASED A LORAN OFF OF EBAY AND EVERYTHING WENT PERFECT FROM THERE. AS FAR AS ALL OF YOU WHO MAY NOT HAVE HEARD LORAN IS HERE TO STAY INDEFINATELY NOW. THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO KEEP IT FOR A BACK UP TO SATTELITE. THEY RECENTLY POURED AROUND 100 MILLION DOLLARS INTO UPGRADING THE LAND BASED STATIONS AND THE SIGNALS ARE STRONGER THAN EVER THUS MAKING LORAN EVEN BETTER THAN YEARS PASS. THE REPEATABILITY WITH LORAN IS OF A HIGHER PERCENTAGE AND SO IS ITS DEPENDABILITY TO FUNCTION WITHOUT INTERFERENCE. SATTELITE SIGNAL CAN BE DISRUPTED BY ANYONE WANTING TO SPEND ABOUT 100.00 ON A DEVICE DESIGNED TO DO THIS. OF COURSE THAT IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE TO DO SO BUT I DOUBT A CRIMINAL OR A TERRORIST REALLY CARES. EVENTUALLY YOU WILL SEE NEW LORANS AND LORAN/GPS COMBOS BEING BUILT BY MORE THAN SITEX. SO QUIT GETTING UPSET BY RUNNING OUT TO A CONVERTED NUMBER ONLY TO FIND THE CONVERSION DIDN'T WORK AND GET YOURSELF A LORAN ONE MORE TIME...SEE YA

Default RE: LORAN UPDATE

Will be interesting to watch all the manufacturers falling over themselves to re-invent Loran units. The number of manufacturers and who these manufacturers actually might be will dictate just how serious the whole use of Loran actually is.

Loran-C has had some upgrades in recent years but the announcement by DHS is just that an announcement that the intention is to migrate Loran-C to E-Loran and of course this has yet to occur and until this has been funded and complete it is rather an assuming statement to say "Loran is here to stay indefinately now"

100 million is nothing more than a drop in the ocean when it comes to the $$'s required to take Loran-C to E-Loran.

The other interesting thing is that this announcement comes from DHS as USCG will be transferring Loran-C operations to NPPD although USCG will continue to operate the system in 2009. Reading between the lines one really needs to ask the question why USCG is given this away ????

And for $100 one might take their own GPS out and possibly the neighbour, big deal as no terrorist really cares about you or your neighbour? 100 bucks could probably also take down a Loran antenna, knocking the whole system out. This type of continuing reasoning by the Loran faithful is becoming a bit dull and boring!

Now if Loran is supposedly going to become bigger, better, more accurate then all old Loran TD's will be useless won't they unless of course the old antiquated inaccurate signal still exists?

DEERHUNTER - 4/30/2008 7:56 PM I have a micrlogic unit as well...Just bought a sitex loran from a captain {deceased} estate. Hoping for some numbers from this as well. Loran has been around for quite a while and is quite accurate!

HELLO KERRY, IN THE ARTICLE I READ THE UPDATES HAVE ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED AND THE LORAN SIGNAL STRENGTH IS NOW ABOUT TWICE AS STRONG AS IT USE TO BE. THEY MADE THE STATEMENT THAT YOU COULD USE A ANTENNA ABOUT HALF AS LONG AS NORMAL. IN THE YEARS I USED LORAN IN THE PAST I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH ITS ACTUALLY AND LOOK FORWARD TO RUNNING TO MY OLD TD'S IF MOTHER NATURE HASN'T CHANGED THINGS UP TO BAD ON THE OCEAN FLOOR. I UNFORTUNATELY NEVER GOT TO UTILIZE MY LORAN AND GPS AT THE SAME TIME OVER MY WAYPOINT TO STORE AN ACCURATE READING AND SEE SO MANY THAT HAVE ENCOUNTERED THE SAME PROBLEM. WITH THE PRICE OF GAS I THINK INVESTING IN A LORAN TO RUN TO AN EXISTING TD IS WORTH IT. I UNDERSTAND THE POINTS YOU MADE AND APPRECIATE YOUR RESPONSE I JUST HOPE THAT WITH THE UPDATES AN OLDER MODEL LORAN WILL STILL BE ABLE TO BE UTILIZED TO ENJOY A DAY OF FISHING WITHOUT ALL THE LET DOWNS AFTER CONVERTING MY NUMBERS THROUGH MY GPS. I WILL CONTINUE TO READ ALL THE THREADS ON THIS SITE BECAUSE THEY ARE ONE OF THE RESOURES I HAVE FOUND TO FURTHER EDUCATE MYSELF...THANK YOU

OH YEAH ONE MORE COMMENT THAT I WANTED TO STATE ON THE REASONING FOR KEEPING LORAN C FUNCTIONAL IS THE MAINTAINING COST EACH YEAR FOR SATTELITE VERSUS LAND BASED. LAND BASED 17 MILLION...SATTELITE 65 MILLION...SEE YA

I've landed a large passenger jet in the touchdown zone with1/4 mi vis using integrated GPS. But doubt I could've found the airport with LORAN ... probably. I wouldn't invest too much in anything LORAN ...

For a start how about you be a good chapy deerhunter and turn your bloody caps lock off!

And when I see manufacturers getting all warm and fuzzy about producing Loran products (again) then all this hoopla might start to be taken seriously.

Yet the USCG have passed the ball, the traditional custodians for Loran, ever thought to ask why?

Yeah? and Loran services about what % of the world? Not a lot is it?

Haven't I seen you two brawling on another site? You're not going to agree on anything, you will have no effect on policy, and its not very entertaining watching two chair-bound belligerents impotently slinging defenseless electrons at each other. It's like two adolescents staging a fight on the playground to impress the girls.

I have been using my Sitex Loran all winter, converting numbers to GPS. It works very well with a short whip antenna now...

See there, Noremac that is the only point i was trying to make is you will still be able to convert your old td's over to gps and that the signal is alot stronger and you will now have a back up to gps for a while it seems. i didn't trash gps or say is wasn't as good as a loran i was just stating statistics that i had read on the internet.I haven't a clue what this Kerry dudes problem is nor do i care. And as far as landing an airplane in the end zone of a football field with a gps and not being able to with a loran i am going to have to figure out how people ever flew planes prior to gps without crashing. i wasn't talking about flying a plane i was talking about finding a rock pile in the bottom of the ocean with a td or lat and long...See ya

Kerry just can't seem to stand the thought that there are still people out there that use Lorans with good results.

I agree with you and it would be far more entertaining if they were slinging heavies at each other

Ah the Loran stalwarts have to try and justify antiquated systems somehow , the rest of the world has actually moved on but then the Loran footprint is nothing more than a bit of a speck? No I'm waiting for all the manufacturers to line up and start making Lorans again, really I am, can't wait, and with the USCG the traditional custodians mind you of all things navigation passing the ball to DHS it's no wonder manufacturers will have the jitters

The real facts don't exist as statistics on the internet? Oh my who ever would have thought that? So much BS so little fact!
