Default GPS with t-top question

Question for the group...internal antenna vs external for a boat with a t-top. I am looking at the Garmin lines, and everything in the $500 range appears to have a built in antenna, but I have been cautioned to not go that route. Anyone have any feedback that might be helpful?

Thanks in advance....

I would think it would work fine but may take a little longer to hook up to satellite's, looks to me like it would be no different that using a handheld in a car/truck

Yeah its really variable. GPS is line of sight only, but the signals will pass through some materials, glass, some plastics, some cloth. Assuming its something you can take back if it doesn't work out, I'd buy what you want and try it in your boat.

any of the current 440/440s, 540/540s, etc have the internal antenna, but you can add the external antenna to the same unit for $60 or so. It is not like the older stuff that was either forever internal antenna or forever external antenna. Now, if you are looking at some of those 498's out there from boe and others, go with the internal, it will work through a t-top just fine

Installed my 540s today and intentionally put up the bimini to see what would happen to the signal; absolutely no change; good strong signal with and without the top up. If it does become a problem, I left the mount from my old Loran in place - external GPS antenna can be put right there, if needed. I've seen the external antenna for $41 and change.
