sonar vs fishfinder

Default sonar vs fishfinder

is there any difference between the two, i was under the impression that they were the same.

The term sonar is "thrown around" by some when they're really referring to a fishfinder or depth sounder. Sonar is generally referring to equipment with a transducer that can be directed or moved either manually or automatically. Fishfinders and depth sounders have fixed position transducers that usually point straight down.
