where is the best place to install a radio on a gradywhite 226 other than the dash box?

OK, you need the physical space to mount it.
It should be out of the weather and spray.
You probably want to be able to reach and see the controls.
You need to be able to mount an antenna near it unless you just use a wire and these don't work very well.
You need to be able to get power and ground to it as well as the speaker wires and antenna lead.

Consider all these requirements and you should be able to make a good decision on your own.

Some marine stereos are available with remote controls so mounting it out of the way and using the remote may be an option.
