Default DSC worth it . . . . Answer

This was asked in another thread a few weeks ago. Some posters said that they have the capability but have not hooked up the wires yet.

Another poster asked if anyone has been rescued yet because of DSC?

This months issue of BoatU.S had a good article on DSC and the 550 million dollar rescue 21 system.

Article gives examples of the rescues that have been made and the state of the system to date.

Pretty amazing system!

You can zoom in on the article (top left plus sign) to make it easier to read.

My neighbor accidently sent a "DSC all ships" signal last night. He immediately verbally xmitted on 16 to disregard the warning.

Within 20 minutes he got a call on his cell phone from the coast guard asking of everything was all right, and they saw he xmitted, and noticed his position was on land. He explained how he accidently did it, and that the boat was in his front yard on a trailer.

20 minutes is along time...but at least they were listening.

20 minutes to get a cell # ...... I bet they tried to contact him on Channel 16 to start but when he didn't answer the call there they tried other methods.

You'll need an mmsi number; you register for that at www.boatus.com

Then you'll input that in your VHF. You'll need to connect the VHF to your GPS, and depending on if your VHF if it is a polling DSC radio (sends AND recieves the GPS data) will determine how much you'll have to hook up; it's not difficult.

I don't believe a MMSI from Boatus is a valid international # you might want to check that out first with Coast Guard.

If you travel in international waters you have to register with the FCC, the BoatUS MMSI is for domestic waters.
