Default Raychart RC 420 --- NO FIX ??

I just bought a boat that among other things has a Raychart RC420 GPS/Plotter on it. I am getting a message saying No Fix and have reconnected the GPS Antennae a few times (which looks perfectly OK). The manual suggests I also check the ground an the antennae, but I do have one. Anyone have any suggestions out there. I would prefer to use this unit for a while rather than replace it as I find myself spending lots of money on other things right now.

Sure you have power to the antenna/receiver?
If you have a multimeter, you can check for pulsing low voltage at the NMEA out to see if it is functioning.

go the system set up page and check your satelites. If you are showing good satellites, it will get a fix, just give it time. If no satellites are showing, it may be the raystar.

Thanks for the advice ... but it still keeps reading no fix.

I have got power to the GPS console itself ... is there a way to tell if you have power tothe antennae?

Also, I checked the Systems Set Up menu and it is not reading any satd. What does this mean?

Is it time to buy a Garmin 540? ;?

In another post I addressed the same issue. Although my issue was with a Lowrance. When I bought the boat it had poor satellite reception. I went through the wiring (power and grounds) to insure that it was adequate. Once eliminating the power supply and grounds, I figured that there was an antenna problem. As noted in the other thread, the dealer mounted the puck antenna flush on the dash. It was virtually surrounded by the the GPS head unit and the VHF on each side. I would gain signal and then lose it often. Before replacing the antenna (which would have been an expensive experiment), I moved the antenna to another location where I could eliminate interference from the other electronics. Where it would normally take 5 minutes or so to lock on to satellites (only to lose the signal), I powered up the GPS with the antenna in the new location a BAM!!!!!! Instant satellites. Obviously the previous owner did not experiment with this option. You could very well have a bad antenna as previously posted. However, before buying an expensive antenna that may (or may not) fix the problem I would try relocating the antenna.
