Default Connecting a Garming GXM31 Antenna

My GXM Antenna has RCA outputs- can I just buy the RCA/terminal end converted cords at Radio Shack and connect the speakers direct to the GXM? I dont currently have a stereo installed on the boat, and it would be much easier if I could just connect direct to the speaker, rather than installing a stereo (one less hole to cut in the boat, and one less thing for somone to steal)

Tom,

So I need only a basic stereo correct? Im assuming if I have a basic stereo with rca connections, my 540s, and the GXM31, I eliminate the need for a XM Compatible stereo, the XM equipment, and XM antenna?

That's correct ... the 540 will control what stations you listen to. There is an XM display page .... see you owners manual.

Can the end attached to the antenna be cut & reattached to make it easy to fish?

If not, can the antenna face down, as in mounted upside down under the t-top electronics box? The instructions say it has to have a clear path to the sky so I would think not, just trying to come up w/ ideas.

Any other suggestions if neither of the previous ideas will work? Thanks. Jonathan

Don't know never cut one ... would get an opinion from Garmin 1st. The antenna will not work face down.

My garmin XM antenna came with a bracket to mount it under fiberglass such as a t-top.. Not sure of the model though. I currently have an automotive Sirius antenna on my boat which is mounted up in the ceiling of my pilothouse so you might want to try testing to see if your antenna will receive if mounted that way. If it works, just order the mount for garmins new antenna. Double check the size first to insure they are the same. I am sure you could make something also by getting a circular piece of starboard to put under the antenna and a few long screws to sandwich the antenna between the starboard and the roof.
