Default transferring waypoints to a 545S

Stumped. Purchased an SD card for the unit on the boat. Question 1: An ordinary sd flash card okay or is there some Garmin card I must purchase? Followed the instructions another board member said and that was to place the card in the Garmin first and let the unit program the card. I did, and the unit seemed to transfer some data. Question 2: Is there a particular type of card reader I must have for the computer? I am using a basic SanDisk card reader. I open Mapsource and try to transfer data to the card reader but if will not. It may be that the reader I am using is just that, a reader. The Mapsource programs finds the device as the F drive but cannot move data either way. Okay all you fishing computer gurus out there, what say you? Thanks.

Any SD Card will work .. I have the 540S and bought a 2 Gig card at Sams for like $19 and works perfect.
Any SD Reader / Writer to USB ... Walmart sells them pretty cheap.
Garmin doesnt tell you this unless you ask there Tech Support which is very helpful I might add,
You have to have the Trips and Waypoint manager software installed to transfer data to and from the SD card.

The Garmin can't read a card bigger than 2GB. Start small: make a couple of waypoints in MapSource, then save then to the card. Put it in the Garmin and you should get a screen about the card.

I looked thru the instructions and it never tells you what is the biggest size card you can use.
I bought the 2 Gig Card cause my Camera uses the same card so figured if I didnt use the card for the Garmin Unit I could use it as a spare in the camera

I have a 1 gig card. So that appears not to be the problem. I suspect the card reader may be the problem. It is one the small type that just plugs into the USB port and the card slides into it. It may be just able to read what is on the card and transfer it to the computer but not write data back. I may just google "card reader / writer" and see what pops up.

did you check to see if you have the lock enabled on the side of the card .. if you can read but not write I bet the lock is on and not the reader / writer

Got it!

Yes, the card was unlocked. The version of the WayPoint software I purchased was 4.0. I tried updating the software from the program. Troubles began. Would not unzip the file. So I went directly to the Garmin website and downloaded the same update file and it unzipped fine from there. Now the Waypoint software can find the card reader and transfer data and I'm good to go.

Thanks for the help guys.
