Default Which antenna mount?

Ok guys, I currently have an old shakespear 3' whip antenna mounted to the side of my console. I would like to replace it with a 4'-5' fiberglass antenna, but all of the ratchet mounts I can find are made to mount flat, meaning if I wanted to lay the antenna down, it would lay to the side of the boat, not the back. Does that make sense? Are there any mounts the other way?

Or should I just get the 3' whip in digital? Which would be better?

I'm not sure what kinds of mounts you have checked out, but take a close look at this one: http://www.boatersworld.com/product/316031673.htm

If you look just above the base, there is a nut and bolt that you can loosen and swivel the actual mount 90 degrees in either direction, so the mount sits at a 90 degree angle to the base. Obviously, you'll want to mount it so the handle is outboard of your console. Then the antenna can be folded down either forward or aft.

There are many other similar mounts in nylon, chromed steel, or the stainless one as shown that have this same adjustment feature.

Ok, I guess I am a complete tool.

Sorry

Ok, well what antenna should I get. I only have a small J16 skiff.

Where are you planing to go that you think you need a 4'-5' fiberglass antenna on a 16 foot skiff?

A heavy duty whip should be fine or I would go with the 3' Shakespeare galaxy antenna.

No problem... I have "senior moments" on an amazingly regular basis.

I'm in the process of putting on a Shakespeare Mariner 4400, a 3' stainless model designed for center consoles. Seems the best for my particular needs. I don't plan on going offshore in this particular boat; most of my travels will be on inland lakes and rivers, with an occasional excursion to the Indian, St John's or Banana River areas where super-long range is not critical.

The Shakespeare 4187HD is a good mount that will work in your application.
