Default Speaker wiring question

Can any of you experts help me with a speaker wiring question. I'm planning on adding two speakers (mounted on my t-top) to my existing 2-speaker system. When I dug into the wiring bundle in the console to locate the additional speaker wires from my Clarion radio I noticed the existing two speakers (mounted below the radio in the console) had small black wires spliced into the (-) speaker wire about 18" from the speaker (and the speaker wire continues to the radio speaker connection). I was unable to trace the black wires to see where they terminated...will have to cut the many wire ties holding a big bundle of wires from all the other electronics running throughout the console.

Since the radio and speaker installation instructions do not discuss anything other than connecting the (+) and (-) speaker wires to appropriate radio wires, I am curious as to why they are there. I've looked over the wiring diagrams for my Cobia 214CC and do not see anything to explain it. Any ideas??

maybe at one point the boat had an older common ground type stereo. this style of stereo required that the negative terminals of each speaker be grounded, and just a single positive wire got connected to each speaker from the stereo.

i would trace those black wires and make sure they are not still grounded, you wouldnt want to connect a newer stereo like your clarion up that way.

Thanks for the reply Duct Tape. I'll dig into the wiring bundle and track down the wire. I believe the existing Clarion XMD3 was factory installed (bought the boat new), and now it's one of those things I just have to know. I'll let you know what I find when I get time to trace the wires.
