Default Cobra VHF/Garmin 498C - DSC

I have a Cobra VHF and a Garmin 498 but I can't get the GPS to recognize the VHF. I went on-line and received my mmis number and then inputted into the VHF but still the Garmin is not showing that the VHF even exists. The dealer did the rigging and said he connected the two so I am not sure what to do now. Does anyone know of anything else to check? I haven't called Garmin customer service yet.

I took a quick look at the online manuals for Cobra fixed mount VHF radios, and it appears that the MR F45, 55, 75, and 75B do not talk to the GPS, they only listen. But when they are correctly connected, you will see your lattitude and longitude displayed on the radio screen. The GPS won't know they are there, but it should be set to talk correctly if the radio can't hear it. By the way, The Cobra MR F80B is a full Class D DSC radio, and will pass data back to the GPS to show callers' positions on your chart. There will be three or four wires to connect!

To check the Garmin's settings, hit the menu button twice and scroll to the Comm tab. You have two comm ports, but if the radio is the only thing connected, don't worry about it. Hit the right arrow to Port #1, and down to the first bar, serial data format. Hit the enter key to bring up a selstion box, and scroll down to select NMEA In/NMEA Out, and and hit enter again. Then do the same for port #2. Then tap the quit button to giterdone!
