Default Which VHF offers superior sound quality?

Hi,

My new boat comes with a Navman VHF from the factory but I have asked them not to fit it, just leave it in the boat still in the box.

The common problem I have come across with VHF radios is poor sound quality. This time I want something that is easy to listen too. More clarity, less distortion.

My reseach suggests ICOM to be a better quality VHF than most of the other brands. Would this also mean better sound quality too? If ICOM are the best, is there one model that would sound better than another?

Any comments are appreciated.

If you want really good sound quality, a remote speaker is the only option.

I like my newer M504. The 402 on my older boat had not so good sound. Maybe due to the size of the speaker?

Having a hearing issue, I prefer Standard Horizon over Icom, also a speaker in the microphone is of great help.

You be the judge ..... 1st up is an ICOM 504 read mic version with a Command MIC III (sound coming from the Command MIC III , followed by an ICOM 504 connected to an ICOM remote speaker.

Video ...... ICOM rear mic attached to a Digital antenna, the other to a Shakespeare Gal 5225.

For my money, this type of handset black box VHF would be really hard to beat for intelligibility of communications in the noisey boating environment: http://www.simrad-yachting.com/en/Pr...-Radio-System/ . This one includes an integrated loud speaker & I have not tried it but for a long time now I have had a set of older version, RS8400?, that is used in conjunction with good Simrad-labeled remote speakers at 2 stations and I wouldn't go back to a conventional style .

Immensely better than the Icom that the Simrad replaced, and much better than any of the "speaker-mic" types by various mfgr's that I have tried on OPBs. . Hopefully your hearing is better than mine these days though.

Good choice Topend. The sound quality on my Icom 422 is superb and I can hear it loud and clear whilst running too. A friend has a SH (not sure what model) and even at full volume whilst trolling, it's hard to hear.

I like the ICom radios. You might also try a digital brand antennea as I think you get better reception than Shakespeare. Just my opinion, when I switched over about 6 years ago and on 2 boats, I know I recieve and transmit further..Good Luck
