Default Sounder interference problem: Simrad CE42 & B260

I'm having some trouble with a Simrad CE 42 that I recently added a B260 to in order to begin using it as a sounder. At speeds over about 15 knots, there is, in my opinion, too much noise on screen. Without Signal Threshold turned on, the screen is obscured by low-level returns, and turning it on cleans the picture up dramatically. But I'm still getting spurious signals throughout the water column on both 50 and 200 kHz. The signal intensity seems generally greater on 50 kHz (reds) than 200 kHz (blue to yellow). In 5-40 fathoms I've pretty much had the gain at 20-30 dB (on a 0-99 dB scale), which I think is about right considering the second bottom echo I get. I've left pulse length and transmit power selections on auto for now after playing with them a bit and getting about the same results.

I suspect this problem is related to my transducer installation, which I did myself. Deadrise on my boat is 20 degrees, and I have the transducer placed about 2 feet from the centerline, about 4 or 5 feet forward from the stern. There is nothing ahead of it to disrupt waterflow. The boat is back in the water now, but I'm wondering if the transducer face is slightly recessed within the fairing block and I need to shim it? It seemed flush within less than 1/16" when I installed it, so I wasn't concerned at the time. The fairing is not backwards and is parallel to the centerline.

If anyone has any input I'd be grateful. I took some pictures today if posting them would be helpful. This is the highest-performance transducer I've had and I know the sensitivity is much greater than the ones I've had before, but the relationship of the problem to boat speed makes me suspect my installation.

Thanks, Steve

I have the cx44 with the combi-c ducer. You are right in that they are very sensitive. I run my gain in the low 50s when running and in the low 60s when drifting but not sure if it is the same on your machine. It might be good to shim it down some and also shim the aft end down more than the front. You want clean water flow over the face.. A good rule is 2-3 deg lower in the back then the front.

When the boat's moving, the bow rises to some extent, so the transducer ends up facing forward anyways. As I understood the instructions, the transducer face is supposed to be flush with the surface of the fairing. As far as setting the gain, I don't know yet. I'll need to get a feel for my echo return colors with the new setup, but this interference has got to go LOL.

As it turns out, I think the problem was a result of my time-varied gain setting being too high. For those interested, I was posting the same problem on another board with photos, which you can see here: http://www.allcoast.com/discussion/V...=1#id100518985

I have a 44 series 1kw 38/200 transducer, just returned it to the dealer, 3yrs still not right, losing image at drift and low speed in 100 to 200mtrs, double image 1/2 way up the screen at 130mtrs to 250mtrs, clutter at depths over 150mtrs, replaced with raymarine and no problem, disgusted with simrad and their service, boat is a 60ft 20degree v transducer located very bottom of v in clear water, had dealer on board several times still couldnt get things right, hope you .have better luck.
