Default Simrad SR 40 Radar

Saw an ad for this radar as a closeout. 10" monochrome 24nm 2kw 18" dome 8.25x6.25 display beam 5.9.

Would this be a good choice. The radar will be used as aid in nite time navigating across delaware bay as well as the occaisional 40 mile jaunt to the tuna grounds early morning. Got souped in 3 times last year and very uncomfortable when ten miles out and hear the horns without seeing the ships.

Boat is a 23 KeyWest CC w/furuno 1850dgps

Are there better entry level units out there? Stay with furuno?

I'm not familiar with that model but it doesn't sound like their entry level machine. What kind of a price did you find? I have the Simrad RA772 radar on my smaller boat which was their entry model 5 years ago and I really like it. There is something about the Simrad displays that I find makes them easy to view and I like the controls - very good equipment IMO.

I have an entry level Simrad on my boat. IMO it is nicer than the entry level Furuno 1622 which I had on a previous boat.

My buddy had an open-array CRT model radar from Simrad, and it is an awesome radar. I have a Simrad CE42, and it is a very impressive piece of equipment. The 40 series was from a year or two ago and doesn't have the daylight viewable TFT screen, but the box is the same.

Great radar. Do you have enough space on your console? They also make a 7" color unit. Others I would look at, Furuno 1712, Furuno 1722,1732.
