Default Electronic installer experts NMEA data- Garmin to furuno sounder and visa-versa

for those of you who have done this I have a Garmin 4212 and a furuno 585. I want the furuno to send the Garmin depth and water temp info and the Garmin to send the furuno GPS coordinates and heading info.

I want to make sure that I am reading the manuals correctly

To accomplish this do I connect the Furuno's white and blue wires with the Garmin's white and orange/white wires so that the furuno can "talk" to the Garmin?

so that the Garmin can "talk" to the Furuno do I connect the Garmin's gray and pink wires to the Furuno's yellow and green wires?

thanks in advance

thanks, so I don't need to connect the "negative" wires to anything? (the orange/white and pink)

Also, I have the xm/weather black box? Does it run contantly or does it only run when the 4212 is on? If the latter how does it know when to cut on and off...through the data wire?

The following 4 connections are required -
4212 NMEA TX+ to 585 NMEA RX+
4212 NMEA TX- to 585 NMEA RX-
585 NMEA TX+ to 4212 NMEA RX+
585 NMEA TX- to4212 NMEA RX-

Wire colors vary by cable, but those are the 4 connections that need to be made in order to do what you want. Then you need to ensure the appropriate NMEA sentences are turned on for transmitting in each unit. To send coordinates you are going to need probably GGA and VTG turned on in the 4212. To send depth/temp, you will need DPT and MTW turned on in the Furuno. You'll need to consult the manuals or someone with specific knowledge of either unit to confirm how to do that.

Hook the orange/white and pink to Garmin ground.

Yes you will need to also connect the NMEA ground

585 Blue to Orange/white
585 Green to Pink

Whoops now that's embarrassing. Don't know why my mind ran with the idea those wires were Furuno. Which begs a question, when did Garmin go with NMEA - wires or is it just certain models?

Not sure what you mean by "When did Garmin go with NMEA - wires"? There has always been NMEA "wires" or do you mean away from the typical use of the battery -ve/Gnd as also the NMEA common ground?

Probably the use of common ground for power/NMEA was a simplistic approach with simplistic port configs (less wires, less pins, cheaper to make? etc) before the multiple NMEA and reversable configurations now provided. You will probably find the common ground is still used on some of the simple models.

Yeah, that was my question. Actually been meaning to ask for awhile. Just to...I guess file away for future reference.
