Default Autopilot

I just took delivery of a 2003 Sea Ray 300 Sundancer. I will be installing a Raymarine SL72C Radaar and a Garmin 182C GPR Chartplotter. With some wiggle I can flush mount both over the helm. Fortunately for 2003 they enlarged the dash area for electronics (a little, but enough).

My question is with two Bravo III stern drives and power steering assisted cable steering, what autopilots would work and how much room behind the helm and shaft are needed?

Thanks.

Raymarine Sport Pilot Plus

Easy to install, copnnects to the shaft of the steering wheel

Not the best on the market

Works more than reasonably well

Good value for the money

Had one, called her Lucy, she chattered a bit (step motor) but it is not annoying!

Will never have another boat without autopilot, except for my liferaft

If you are going to use the Simrad 12R or 14R models you need 10" behind the helm. They supply a new helm with the motor attached. That will be a total of 10".

Have had both. I havent had the Simrad AP14R long enough to speak of durability, but it is from a construction standpoint 10 times the quality of the Sportpilot+. I would advise highly against the Sportpilot+ on a 30' boat. The Simrad AP12 can be found for within $100-200 of the Sportpilot. For $100-150 more, you can get the AP14(I paid $1060 delivered for the AP14R(rotary steering), which has a digital compass and heading readout.
