Default Radar doing something weird.

Turned it on the other day and realised that it's showing a strong return, in a perfect circle, in a radius about a hundred yards around the boat. Everything past that it still reads fine. I turned it off and back on and it was still there. Maybe I hit an adjustment, by accident, that I don't normally use. Anyone have any ideas?

What does it do on the 1/8 or 1/16 mile scale?

The doughnut you describe is indicative of a radars timing adjustment. Check your manual on how to adjust your particular model.

Changing the distance doesn't change the circle at all.

What kind of radar unit? It maybe as simple as havingthe gain turned up too high.

If that's not the problem, with a Furuno, go to the "installation menu" which you access by pressing menu while powering up. One of the radar setup items is "main bang" suppression. This will allow you to reduce or eliminate the circle. You may also have a timing issue, whichyou can also adjust from that menu. But be careful because you can really mess up the accuracy of the unit by incorrectly setting the timing. Look in your manual, of course. The timing set procedure is to find something that will give a straight line reflection such as a bridge or bulkhead and tune until it is as straight as possible.

Sounds to me like you turned on some sort of range measuring. I know my radar has this option.

Were there any UFOs reported in that area? Any lost time, or unexplained metallic implants in your body? This could be an X file...

I seem to have the same problem on the short range as well. on the 1/8 and 1/4 mile my screen has alot of clutter. I have a Furuno 1622, let me know what you find out..
Thanks
Pete

To adjust the sweep timing as in the installation manual. If you don't have it you can download it from www.furunousa.com. My unit does the exact same thing. I am going to try to adjust it today. I'll let you know if it works.

it's definitely main bang (black hole effect). i had to do two things on my furuno radar (an 1833). first, i had to access the installation menu (hold down menu key when turning on) and go to radar setup and turn on the m.b. (main bang) suppression. then, when in regular radar tx mode, i had to turn up the anti-sea clutter a bit. you have to adjust it a bit on different ranges, but these adjustments should be made on a lower range.

hope that helps...

Thank you all for your responses, I just printed them all out, so I can follow your suggestions accurately. It'll be a few days before I can try them out, my boat is still over in perdido-key(100 mls away). It's a furuno fcv-667. I have no doubt that One of these suggestions will correct the problem. Once again you guys have proven what a valuable tool this forum can be.

The FCV667 is a fishfinder. Perhaps that's the problem.
