Default Spreader lights????

I see a lot of folks talk about spreader lights on their t tops. I am interested in adding a set of these to my boat but I have a question. Are these a "special" marine light or will any "off" road type of light work. Also how do they attach to the t top rails(drill and bolt them in or do they have mounting brackets that wrap around the tubing??)
thanks

The marine spreader lights usually have waterproof housings that are UV and Salt resistant. Additionally they use Stainless Steel hardware for mounting instead of the normal crome plated steel.
If you are attaching these to Fiberglass, drilling and screing things in is not a problem.
If you are attaching them to an aluminum tube top, things are a little more of a challange.
Stainless steel reacts to aluminum and should be insulated from direct contact in the presence of salt water. So you would want to provide a insulator between these metals by using something like a Heavy walled plastic tubin, with 5200 under it to keep it from slipping. Then use stainless steel "C" clamps or band clamps to hold the mounting base in place around the wall of the plastic tubing.
(I have done this to a lot of boats.)
You do NOT want aluminum in contact with stainless steel screws or mounts in the presence of salt water. It will corrode the stainless steel in a few weeks and look like heck in a few days.
