I had a Magellen 300, and I gave it away. It looked like something I wanted when I bought it, but in the sunlite I couldn't read the display.

If it takes studying time to read the DSY, it's taking too much time. You might run into something, even in a Sailboat.

WHo know's of a 'cheap' GPS that has a wide DSY, or the ability to really darken the characters?
I think 4" to 6" ought to be wide enough.

Only without my glasses and I swear the displays are getting smaller

Somebody tell me they are , they are ain't they.

Cheers, Kerry.

I never get lost, everybody tells me where to go!

I have just purchased raymarine RL70CRC radar/chartplotter and the RL760 FF. Love both for ease of operation and have been able to navigate in heavy rains and in the dark in unfamiliar creeks, etc. However, since my reading vision is deteriorating with age (the print nowadays isn't what it used to be), I have to really work at seeing the numbers and reading text. I am thinking of purchasing a flat reading magnifier overlay http://www.delpozzo.com/magnifiers/ShMagWc.htm , mounting it on light glass, making two stainless rods with clips to clip onto the display and attaching to the glass top corners so that I can adjust the magnifier distance from the screen until I find the correct focal point. Don't know if this will work but I have to do something to make it easier to read the display. My progressive glasses don't work because both the display on the dash and the one overhead force me to tilt my head in funny ways to find the correct focus.

Is there anything on the market to help improve readability of the screen?

A good friend just bought a Garmin summit hand held and I swear the thing is so hard to read I had to use a magnifying glass to make out the display.

Chapter 7 details how to change Custom Settings that will allow Test Size to be changed from Small / Normal / Large. Factory Default is Normal.

I think I love you HookMan! The info doesn't appear to be in chapt. 7 but a look at the FAQ on the Raymarine sight quickly gave the necessary info. (I had been told by the installer that there was no way to adjust text size) I feel like running out to the boat in this night gale to test the adjustment! Thanks.

Your welcome. That display is the best resolution I have seen. Now you can put the money into a good SW+ chip. Just be sure to change the plotter setting to obtain the best zoom-in resolution.

I saw the Text size setting but have never tryed it.

The text size setting works ok, but really the problem in my opinion is NOT the text size but the orientation of the text from the charts. In normal mode, the text is too small and un-readable. In custom mode, the text turns and tosses with the rest of the map so it can be even more difficult to read sometimes. I've written to Raymarine about this problem. I don't understand why they don't keep the text rightside up in custom mode ??

Try taking your boat and driving down the coast of Fire Island a few miles offshore. You pass about 30 towns listed on the chart BUT, can only read about two of them because the text is all screwy.

It is a function of the chart and the software though, not the display.

Anywho.
