Default Need help with Magellan 300 Handheld GPS

I purchased the 300 a while ago and then decided to go with a built-in unit with FF, so I sold the new, unopened, 300 to a guy on the east coast. Now he tells me that the unit will only pick up one, maybe two satellites, and when he called Magellan about it, they told him that the Gov't changed Sat's and that the 300 will no longer work. They want $75 to upgrade the unit.

Does anyone know what that is all about? Does that mean all older (2-3 years) GPS units are obsolete? Is it true? I have no experience with handhelds. He wants to back out of the deal.

Thanks,

Bruce B

Magellan is full of S%#@*&!! I have the same unit (as backup) and it WORKS!! Quite slow to pick up sat's, but it does work.

I have the original book if he needs a copy of it. Would have to scan & eMail or snail mail

Thanks for the response. He has the manual, and said that he followed it exactly as it states. He says that he can only receive one or two Sats after sitting out in the open for a long time.

Is the a hemisphere (or something like that) type of initial setting for the unit, so it knows which Sats to look for? Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks,

Bruce

Spelling- there

I just notice you are in South Bend. I have been there quite a few times. I stay at the Jamison Inn, and have hung out at Coach's lounge. Nice town.

ABoater, Know it well. You must me a "Domer" (Notre Dame alum, for you out-of-towners)

Tell him he needs to set it up right. It needs to know REGION, COUNTRY, STATE, ELEVATION, TIME, and DATE. Without this info, it can't coordinate the sats with the known locations.

Thanks to the both of you. I really do appreciate it.

Actually the closest that I got to the college (other than staying across the street from it) was when I met Lou Holtz at a function in town. I was in the Hummer business, so I'm sure you know why I was there...

I saw a lot of great looking country on my trips there. The most "exciting" time for me was the puddle jumper flight from Chicage to South Bend (in the winter). As we were boarding I asked the flight attendant what world war did they salvage the plane from. I fully expected someone to go out and pull the prop to get the engine started!

I rented cars and made the drive each way from Chicago after that.

Thanks again,

Bruce B
