Default which on Garmin 4212 or Ray C120

If you had to pick one of them which one would it be and why. It would include FF, radar and chartplotter. Thanks for your input. H

Ford or Chevy and why. I think a lot of people have their favorite and they will justify each one. I always hear that Ray is better - Garmin is easier to use. I bought the Garmin Network because they had the Sat weather service first and I wanted that last year. I love the Garmin, but I have honestly never used the Ray. I have heard great things about the Ray - I dont think you can go wrong. Go with whichever you get a better deal on.

I agree with smanni, I own Garmin for my own boat and use Ray C-120 on a boat I run for someone else. I love the screen on the Ray but find the Garmin so much easier to use. The Ray requires a few more clicks here and there to get to where you want to be and sometimes because of the ambiguity in my opinion of the function labels, it is easy to make the wrong choice and have to back up or start over again. It will be interesting to see if the playing field gets a little more competitive when the 4212 arrives.

Price works out to be about the same for both. What about the fish finder on both? Radar on the new 18" Garmin better or even with the Ray? I don't have any way to compare the two and I need some help. thanks

I've had both Raymarine and Garmin products installed on my Whaler. The Raymarine HD FF technology is terrific and has been validated over the last few years. The Garmin FF technology has been lagging behind over the last few yearsbut with the release of the new Garmin series 400/500/4000/5000 that tehcnology is supposed to take a quantum leap. Now when is comes to GPS/Chartplotters Garmin excels! Their GPS/CP'ers are easy to use, have terrific functionality, and great displays. They invented the integration of weather into the chartplotter world when they partnered with XM three years ago.The other venders have finally figured it out and addedSirius Weather/Music to their lines (Ray/Furuno/Northstar). The major difference in this is that Garmin supperimposed the weather data over your existing navigation page while the rest display it in a seperated window.

I'm a fan of redundacy and seperate funtionalities that's why I installed aGarmin 2206 (primary)& Garmin 545 (backup)and a standalone Furuno 620 FF. I feel the Garmin GPS/CP'ers are easier to use (my preference) than the Raymarine. I install marine electronics and find it much easier to train new users on the Garmin GPS/CP'ers. Now when it comes to FF it's pretty easy to teach either vendors equipment.

Here's some video of the new Garmin GPS/CP technology in action.

maybe I don't get it but why would you mount that new GPS behind the steering wheel? Not trying to bash, just curious.

It's a backup ..... I stand to drive so I tilt the steering wheel straight up and down andpositionthe 545 parallel to the deck in the mounting bracketand can see it perfectly and if I sit the steering wheel tilts upward at such an angle as not to restrict my view. Good question ... by the way I made a new mounting bracket for it instead of using the one that came with it for this specific purpose. The other reason not any other options.

Tom do you think or does anyone else know if the FF on the Garmin has made a "leap" into the category of the Ray or Furuno? What about the radar on Garmin is it on the same level as Ray or Furuno? I just have not seen the Garmin in action other than the simulator. I like the interface on the Garmin but don't know how the other parts compare to the competition. Thanks for the help

hh ....

I've had my 545 on the water but I don't have the "s" version. You'll have to wait for some feedback from those that have the combo package. I install Garmin radars and they have improved. As you make your choices their will be some tradeoffs when it comes mutlifunction units ... so keep this in mind. Remember you can always substitute a another vendors equipment especially in the lines of FF.

I just installed a b260 transducer and a GSD-22 to my Garmin network. I am launching tomorrow and using it Sat and Sun. I will post what I think about it after that.

smanni thanks I would be very interested to hear your option after the weekend. Tom your right about giving up some things with the multi. I even through about getting a 4208 and then a Furuno FF but the hard part there is that the diff in price form the 4208 and the 4212 I don't think it is worth going with the smaller screen size. Thanks

I'm looking at the same choice. I belive I will be buying the Garmin 4212. The superior graphics, less expensive 4kw Radar, XM weather have tipped the scales to the Garmin.

Glad to know that I am not alone Q3131A. The same decision you are facing is the exact one I am working on. By the end of the weekend, mine will be made.
