Default Is the 178C dated?

I'm getting ready to rig a 22' Bay Boat and will probably use Garmin because of good results I've had with them especially those with internal antennas.

The 178C is probably enough, but how far back is the technology to their newer models? Would you spend the extra hundred for newer models?

Thanks in advance for your input!

I just upgraded from a 182C to a 498....the biggest difference was the installed G2 charts.

By the time you buy a 178C and a Bluechart, you might be able to pick up a 498 for the same money....and get the built in sounder.

The 178C is ancient technology - get a newer unit.

Gps is getting like computers, you can buy the latest and greatest and it is outdated by the time you install it.

I have the 178c as my GPS/sounder in my Parker. I just couldn't throw it out, and it came with the boat. It is fine for Barnegat Bay, but if I weren't such a cheap skate I'd get much more unit. I figure I need to learn more old fashioned navigating/ dead reckoning first anyway.

If you are going in the ocean get more; it doesn't cost much more at all.

My new to me 2005 Montauk came with one. I'm with Sal, I just could not see tossing it out. In fact, its not a bad little unit. Last week I bought the chip from NJ to NC for $89.00 on ebay and the detail is as good as my 2010C was. I just need to get used to the screen size. Next year I'll put a larger unit on, but for now its fine.

I had that unit; it's nice GPS. If it works for you keep it. The new stuff from Garmin will make everything they put out look outdated.
