Default Garmin GMR18 Radar Sweep Speed Adjust

If you have a Garmin GMR18 you may not know you have a 2 speed radar. The radar speeds are 24RPM and 30RPM. The radar operates at slow speed closer than 12 miles and high speed further out. However with the latest updates you can manually override the radar speed. With the radar operating press the ADJ button, the last selection will say: Speed Normal . Highlight the Speed setting and press enter, you will get a HIGH speed selection.. FYI

That sounds backwards. Shouldn't the higher speed be used on the closer ranges? Targets change screen position faster at close ranges than they do at long ranges, so it is more important to update close range target information at a faster rate.

No, we removed the dome cover and verified this for ourselfs. I agree it sounds backwards but that is how this radar operates. It is nice to be able to select the speed you want when you want it. The only other radar that Garmin has a speed adjustment is the GMR404 / 406 mike

seems to me that slower speed would give better target discrimination, which is why they would use the slower speed for close-in operation--when target separation is important. so, of course you would want faster update, but don't you also want better target discrimination? pick your poison, i guess

At night I want the fastest update possible, I manually set my gain and range and leave it there. I don't like the Auto gain on the Garmin radar.
