Default Handheld VHF Recommendations

I am looking for a handheld VHF for my boat. Since the boat is on a large lake, I plan to mostly use it as a weather radio and (hopefully never) as an emergency radio.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive but decent radio?

I like the new Icom floating radio. It is about $160 or so. But it floats. That is pretty cool.

Uniden makes a $100 radio. Midland makes the "nautico" for $50, but it is not waterproof. The "deluxe" package comes with a waterproof plastic bag for the thing.

Whatever you get, look for a radio that will use alkaline batteries as well as a rechargeable pack. If you do not use the radio very often the rechargeable packs tend to not last too long. Replacement packs are often very expensive. With the alkaline option if the rechargeable pack gives out just buy some Duracells and you are ready to go. Something that is waterproof is also a good thing to look for.

Oh yea, Cobra makes a radio sold in packs of two for $70. These radios do not operate at the full 5 watts. So I would avoid them.

You can get a Standard Horizon HX270S for less than or right at $100 shipped from quite a few different places - eBay, BOE, etc. It doesn't float, but it is submersible with a 3 year waterproof warranty.

It comes with an alkaline battery tray in addition to its rechargeable battery. I don't think its alkaline tray compromises the water resistance of this radio, either. I seem to recall that being a problem with some.
