Default Garmin GPSMap 396 and 496

Does anyone have a Garmin 396 or a 496? I'm considering gettting one (probably 396) to use primarily in a plane but also to use on the water. If I get one I'll get the XM aviation weather subscription. I'm curious about battery life, ease of use, ease of seeing the screen, and quality of picture? THey aren;t cheap but If I could get it to serve double duty as a portable GPS in the air and also on the boat that would make some sense. Any XM weather feedback?- i've only heard good things about ir from other pilots.

I have a Garmin 295 and like it very much. It is a bit tough on batteries though, so I *highly* recommend getting the 12-volt power adapter. That color screen loves electricity... While I have never had used the models you are speaking of, I have a 430 in my Piper Aztec and I have two Garmin handhelds and a 178C in my boat. I am seriously thinking of getting a 3010 or similar unit, and putting the 178C upfront on the bow.

The XM weather is very cool--I used it a lot in my car and in our RV. Then some scumbag stole the receiver out of my truck in my driveway and that was that. All I had to do was to call XM and have them deactivate the unit, and it's basically only good for parts. But I used the basic aviation package and liked it very much, and wouldn't hesitate a minute to get one of the units you mentioned.
