Default Garmin 178 and 498

I picked up my BW yesterday. The guy had a Garmin 178 GPS/Sounder without any chips. The chip I want is $169.00 (MUS504L). I can buy the 498 online for $471.00. Does it make sense to buy the chip? or should I just spend the money on the new 498? The wiring is already done and the harness is the same on both.

Is it the 178C (the color one) or the b&w version?

If it is the color version keep it. If it is the b&w version replace it.

The 178c is a great unit; as said--if its color, buy a chip (or software and chip) and enjoy.

I think you did the right thing. After seeing the new 545S, the 498 doesn't seem like the model to upgrade to anymore.
